OWL Studio · urges, sex & substance use

Understand the pattern. Choose the next safe step.

A non-judgemental pathway for pornography, sexual behaviour, alcohol or other substance use. Start with safety, understand what the behaviour is doing, and connect the need with practical skills and human support.

Before behaviour skills

What level of help is needed now?

Choose the safest answer. A behavioural plan cannot replace emergency care, withdrawal assessment, consent or medical treatment.

Four different contexts

Choose the closest pathway.

The pathways share change skills, but their health and safety boundaries are different. Choose one without using the label to define the whole person.

Selected pathway

Pornography or online sexual content

01
How the loop may form

Easy access, privacy, novelty and a fast shift in feeling can turn a cue into an automatic online sequence before a deliberate choice appears.

Signals to take seriously
  • Repeatedly using longer than intended
  • Returning after deciding not to
  • Interference with sleep, work, intimacy or finances
  • Escalating content or risk
  • Using mainly to escape distress, loneliness or shame
First safe steps
  1. 1

Leave the device and setting where the sequence usually begins.

  2. 2

Name the need and delay the next click for ten minutes.

  3. 3

Add one layer of friction and open a replacement action before the next high-risk time.

Professional support

A psychologist, counsellor or sexual-health clinician can help when the pattern feels compulsive, is escalating, or is entangled with trauma, relationship distress or shame.

Look underneath the behaviour

Map the loop—not just the last action.

Different behaviours can become part of a similar learning cycle. Changing the context and meeting the underlying need gives the pause somewhere useful to lead.

01Cue

Time, place, device, person, money, sensation, thought or emotion.

02Need + urge

Relief, reward, sleep, connection, confidence, escape or habit.

03Behaviour

The fastest learned route changes the state for a while.

04Short effect

Relief, stimulation, numbness, belonging or release.

05After-effects

Health, shame, cost, conflict, fatigue or avoidance can increase vulnerability.

Function before replacement

What job is the behaviour doing?

Select every need that fits. This does not excuse harm; it shows what the change plan must address if it is going to be usable.

One plan for the next repetition

Build a private change card.

The plan opens after the safety check. Choose a realistic direction; reducing harm, seeking treatment and rebuilding choice are meaningful change.

For partners, family and friends

Support change without becoming surveillance.

01

Talk when everyone is able to engage

Use specific observations and impact. Avoid labels, humiliation, interrogation or trying to force a confession.

02

Hold safety and boundaries

You can care about the person and still set limits around money, driving, substances in the home, sexual consent, honesty or children’s safety.

03

Put professional support in the plan

Do not take sole responsibility for detox, overdose monitoring or controlling another adult’s behaviour. Get your own support too.
